Many of us played "follow the leader" as children. This game could provide hours of fun as players alternatively assumed the role of leader and follower. On occasion, however, some episodes of this playacting ended in tears or hurt feelings as the appointed leader's abilities to effectively lead were called into question. In many respects, leadership of the modern corporation is not substantially different, in principle, from this childhood game. The key to the game, however, is to devise a system of leadership and "followership" that ensures that shareholders are not hurt in the endgame. Suboptimal leadership at the board level can compromise the entire corporate governance system. To this end, board leadership remains a perennial point of discussion among corporate board members, corporate management, shareholders, the investment community, and corporate governance activists.
