This short book comes at the right time. The debate on the recently published "Draft Common Frame of Reference" (DCFR, Principles, Definitions and Model Rules of European Private Law), preceded by the Acquis Principles drafted by the Acquis Group on existing EC Private Law (see my review of both in the previous issue of this journal, pp. 369-374) is going in high tide, and a book as the one under review by a young and competent author who himself served on the Acquis Group can help clarify issues. It is also to be welcomed that the author limited himself to contract law strictu sensu, not trying to go into an overall "law of obligations" as the authors of the DCFR do (see the critique by Schulze and Wilhelmsson (2008, p. 158).) Indeed contract law has been submitted to an intense, although haphazard, process of harmonization which the author describes as "islands, or blots, of European law within national contract law" (p. 10). He concentrates of some of the most important issues in EU contract law, e.g., consumer contracts, certain commercial transactions, without going into such areas as non-discrimination law (see Reich (2005a)), passenger law (see Karsten (2007)), services of general interest (see Rott (2007)), and similar, however, rather specialised areas.
