Accountability processes can result in crisis managers' resignation.The literature is rife with strategies on how to cope with intense blame levels, but the complexity of reality can render these strategies useless or even harmful. A case in point is the aftermath of one of the most serious riots in Dutch recent history where police officers shot at rioters to save themselves. In this article, we show that the police chiefs resignation, while the mayor remained in office, can be explained through a combination of (mis)handling blame and contextual factors such as the mayor being recently appointed.
