Growth and mechaical properties of lysozyme crystals

摘要

Vickers microhardness of protein crystals of hen egg-white lysozyme wasinvestigated by the indentation method. The indenttions were celarly made on he crystal surfacje and no large elastic recovergy of them was observed. The vlaue of the hardness was estimaed to be 0.2 kgf/mm~2 on the crystals just after they were transferred from solution to air. The hardness drastically increasediwth increasing exposure time to air at room temeprature. The maximum hardness was 20 kgf/mm~2, which is almos the same as hose of van der Waals crsyals. The origin of such a change in hardness is explained in terms of the wate contained in protein crsytals.
