Directional growth and characteriztion of Fe-Al-Nbeutectic alloys

The manufacturing of components for operaion at high temeprautres requries the use of metallic materials which cna keep satisfactoy mechanicla and chemicla properites, even at temperautrs beyond 100 deg C. An intereting alternative to solve such a problem is the use of directionally solidifed eutectic alloys. A potentially promising system for the manufacture of structural materials, andso far not totally studied, is the eutectic based on the Fe-Al-Nb system, which involves the (FeAl)_2Nb pahse and the FeAl solid solution. Eutectic samples formthis system were directionally solidified in a vertical Bridgman crystal groth unit. The objective of he experimens was to determine the infleunce of the grwoth rate on the eutectic microstructure. The ingots obtained weere investigated by using optical and electron scanning microscopy. At low growth rate, the eutectic microstructure remained regualr, even throgh it shwoed several types of microstructure defects. As the growth rate was increased, a transition form lamellawr to fibrous morphoogy was observed.
