摘要

Ground modification and improvement became a major sub-discipline of geotechni-cal engineering during the latter part of the 20th Century, as did also geotechnical earthquake engineering become a major sub-discipline of earthquake engineering. It is now evident that ground improvement has become a major component of geotechnical earthquake engineering, and its role will continue to develop during the 21st Century. One or more of the several available ground improvement and soil stabilisation methods can be used to treat potential seismic instability before construction of new facilities and infrastructure, to mitigate seismic risk to existing infrastructure and structures, and to rehabilitate sites that have been damaged by earthquakes.
