The title of Cheryl Misak's superb biography of Frank Plumpton Ramsey (1903-1930), the first comprehensive account of his personal and academic life, comes from a description of Ramsey by Joseph Schumpeter.1 Schumpeter, the aristocratic Austrian economist who at Harvard supervised the dissertations of both Paul Samuelson and James Tobin, judged Ramsey from the perspective of an accomplished horseman, comparing him to an overgrown two-year-old thoroughbred frolicking with ideas, "who misbehaves on the race course from sheer excess of powers" (Misak 2020, p. ⅹⅹⅳ). In his short but extraordinarily productive life, ended by organ failure of then unknown origin at the age of twenty-six (possibly from leptosporosis), Ramsey published only two articles in The Economic Journal, then edited in commandeering style by John Maynard Keynes. Both of these papers-one dealing with optimal taxation and the other optimal savings-have been foundational in these fields and the second a particular basis of the economics of sustain-ability. Although largely theoretical, these papers represent the best traditions of applied economics: They are simultaneously analytical and pragmatic (Runge 2008). They are, at base, also deeply humanistic, in contrast to much of the arid analytical work that his ideas have engendered.
