摘要

There is a great need for a history of economy in the Middle East. Since the works of Roger Owen (1981) and of Charles Issawi (1982), few have ventured into this field. There have been a number of studies of particular regions, such as the work of Halil Inalcik (1994) and Suraiya Faroqhi (1995) on the Ottoman Empire (mainly the Anatolian part) and Andre Raymond (1974) on Cairo, but these have not claimed to write a global history of the Middle East.
