In 2009, Reinhart and Rogoff published their monumental survey of eight centuries of debt crises (Reinhart and Rogoff 2009). That exhaustive study highlighted several key points, the most important of which is that debt crises may take many different guises, but that the essentials of overborrowing and the consequent aftermath remain constant. A Decade of Debt picks up on their earlier work, and expands upon the likely consequences of the debt that has been accumulated since their previous study was written. In that regard, the book serves an extremely useful function, distilling the findings from previous works, and then placing those findings in the context of the events that have transpired since 2009.
