摘要

Ekelund and Tollison have tackled a big question in their latest venture into understanding the Catholic Church. Their book examines the first 1,000 years of the church, and completes their trilogy of Christian religion over the past 2,000 years—their other books having looked at the church in the high middle ages, the reformation and subsequent birth of competitive religion in modern day. They do this in 250 pages. The book has three parts. The first three chapters lay out a theory of religion, belief, and the forces that might drive the organization of both. The next four chapters form the heart of the book, and chronologically trace the organizational aspects of the church from its beginning to about 1100 AD. The final chapter tries to link the material in the book to current day church practices and issues.
