摘要

This excellent short book for nontechnical consumers of economic facts provides a framework for understanding what accounts for U.S. income inequality trends, what's behind the substantial increase in income inequality since 1979, and what would be necessary to return us to 1979 levels. The first part introduces the reader to how applied economists use Current Population Survey (CPS) data to both conceptualize and estimate two important sets of societal economic success indicators—levels and trends in the returns to individual laborers (hourly wage rates and labor earnings) and their distribution, and levels and trends in the pretax family income (in-cash market income as well as in-cash government transfers) of individuals of working-age and its distribution.
