While passenger aviation is a frequent subject of study, work devoted to air cargo is in shorter supply. Before Morrell's Moving Boxes by Air, book length treatments of the subject were few and far between. This is unfortunate because the economics of air cargo is a subject ripe for study. Due to sharp declines in the price of air cargo, a large and growing fraction of world trade moves by air (Hummels 2007). Firms use aviation to transform global supply chains, hedge volatile demand, and alter patterns of comparative advantage. (Aizenman 2004; Harrigan 2010; Hummels and Schaur 2010, 2012).
