摘要

There are very few multimedia materials made specifically for library and information science (LIS) education, and almost nothing related specifically to our field’s intellectual history. This is unfortunate, since such formats appeal to students and are accessible and memorable in ways that conventional print resources often are not (Guzik, Griffin, & Hartel, 2020). I am writing to share with JELIS readers a short, PowerPoint-based video I created, entitled Turn, Turn, Turn, that surveys theoretical and methodological “turns” that have swept across LIS since 1986.1 It was inspired by the folk song, “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)”, which was written by Pete Seeger and best-known in a version recorded by the Byrds. The song expresses the reality of a changing, or turning, world. A turn is a theoretical and/or methodological approach that emerges as an alternative to the status quo. Turns are based upon ideas but driven by outspoken and persuasive champions. Starting in 1986, and in loose chronological order, the video describes and illustrates seven theoretical turns within LIS, including the cognitive turn, affective turn, neo-documentary turn, socio-cognitive turn, everyday life turn, social constructionist turn, and embodied turn. Each turn is profiled with attention to its origins, tenets, key players, signal concepts, influential publications, concomitant methods, and enduring contributions. Each turn is also assigned a visual logo for quick identification in the future (Figure 1). Two scholars are then profiled who have taken archetypical positions: Birger HjØrland (a dedicated turner) and Marcia J. Bates (a resolute non-turner). The video closes with reflections on the positive and negative impacts of turns for knowledge production in our field and playful suggestions for future turns that may enrich the LIS enterprise. A goal of the video is to help everyone in LIS become more aware of the sea changes that sweep across our discipline.

然后,两位学者们已经拍摄了原型职位:BirgerHjørland(专用式特性机构)和Marcia J. Bates(一个坚决的非特纳)。
