Prototype Fault Current Limiter with a High T_c Superconducting Coil

摘要

A snail prototype of an electrical distribution line fault current limiter (FCL) has been built based upon the principle of a magnetic core saturable reactor, and tested in a low voltage simulation network. The principle of this limiting method is known, but the new effort is to introduce a high critical temperature (T_c) ceramic (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_(10+x) Ag clad superconducting wire in this power application. This high temperature superconducting wire has the advantage of operating in liquid nitrogen, rather like a conventional low temperature superconductor which needs liquid helium to operate. The concept of using a high T_c Bi-2223 Ag clad superconducting coil is introduced as well as an explanation of the prototype design and tests. The testing results of the high T_c superconducting coil and electrical measurements of the prototype will produce a base to evaluate the application of high T_c superconductors in this situation.
