摘要

Alma Holland Beers' career in science was a singular accomplishment for a woman of her day. Her contributions to botany were particularly significant when placed in the context of the time she lived. Soon after the conclusion of World War II, less than 3% of scientists in the United States (not including medical personnel), were women (USDLWB, 1948). Women in the botanical sciences constituted slightly over 3% of the work force (USDLWB, 1949). Perhaps a major reason for her success was, as paraphrased by her niece Eleanor Finley (2002), her facility for scientific and factual thinking, as well as her sensitive, caring and thoughtful ways, traits that in her time would have been considered masculine and feminine, respectively. Her parents' encouragement of her wishes to obtain a higher education and William C. Coker's guidance provided critical stepping stones in her professional career. Her publications, her editorial work, and her teaching are among her more tangible contributions. Less obvious was her role in keeping the everyday operation of the Department of Botany running smoothly. Her loyalty to the Department of Botany and University and her devotion in working for Coker were steadfast and genuine. Alma's intelligence, retentive mind, thorough manner of work, and accomplished artistic skills earned her a lasting and well deserved place in botany.
