Fannin explores how China has progressed from the technology boom through case studies of technology entrepreneurships. She structures her book by dividing it into three segments: the Copy Cats, the Venture Capitalists, and the Innovators. In each segment of the book, the author examines the plight and triumphs of the founders of several companies started in China and illustrates that each company is winning the tech race by being copy cats and innovators. The first segment, the Copy Cats, highlights the tales of several startup companies. The first is Baidu - a search engine copying Google but produces more precise searches in Mandarin. One of the company's two founders, Robin Li, comes from Beijing University and earned a Masters in Computer Science from the State University of New York. The other founder, Eric Xu, is also a Beijing University graduate with a doctorate from Texas A&M University. Baidu is winning the tech race by having home grown smarts with a home grown advantage. However, Baidu's search engine is still subject to government censorship and questionable business practices, such as having links to pirated music.
