ISBN 0-87555-213-X.rnIn the realm of science education, there is perhaps no more significant and relevant a subject to study than water quality, quantity, timing, and distribution. As the authors of this third installment in the Cornell Scientific Inquiry Series suggest, develop, and examine, "Clean water is essential for life" (p. 5). Not only is each human largely composed of water, but also individuals reside in, depend on for our health, inflict abuses on, and are sustained by watersheds. Accordingly, watersheds are, in this text, a conceptual framework for involving students in the actual testing, analysis, and design of the hydrologic cycle and water resources in a region, school, or neighborhood. The book emphasizes a set of questions and experimental protocols that "investigates the relationship between human actions on the biology, chemistry, and hydrology of water resources" (p. 5). Carlsen and Trautmann promote investigative skills and critical thinking through suggesting peer review of each experimental finding.
