HYGIENIC EVALUATION OF THE WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE SYSTEMS IN THE EVROS PREFECTURE, GREECE

摘要

Two of the main environmental problems in Greece are the increase of needs in potable water and the crisis of quality that cause the pollutant human activities. These problems are particularly intense in the Greek region, which is many times deprived of executives, infrastructures and know-how for the confrontation of complex problems. The aim of this paper is to examine the development of sectors of water supply and sewerage and the quality of potable water in the prefecture of Evros. In this research have been used: (a) data of the National Statistical Service of Greece; (b) special questionnaire, concerning sectors of water supply - sewerage systems, was sent and supplemented to the departments (87) of all municipalities of the prefecture of Evros in collaboration with the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace; (c) the archives of the laboratory of Hygiene of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Laboratory of Hygiene has a lot of years the control of quality of potable water for the region, and (d) the results of chemical analysis of 134 potable water samples received by an equal number of departments of all municipalities of prefecture of Evros during September 2006. The present study showed that there is an intense problem of nitrate pollution in the plains of Evros and there is a need for immediate incorporation into a water denitri-fication program and continuous testing of the levels of nitrate ions. It was also realised that there is an intense problem with the insufficient chlorination of water in the villages that can potentially undermine public health. There is a need of systematic chlorination and hygienic control of potable water in order to prevent the waterborne enteric infections. Despite the fact that the prefecture of Evros is sufficient in water resources, an important percentage of population has water supply with interruptions especially in the summer months. Above 45% of residences have no connection with sewerage networks and above 50% of produced sewages are channelled in the streams and the rivers of the prefecture without any biological treatment.
