Amid a resurgence of academic interest in the concept of cosmopolitanism in recent years, this paper explores the ways in which practices of cosmopolitanism are played out in the workplace. Singapore's financial sector is selected as a case study of a context that might be expected to exemplify a vanguard for the acceptance of difference. Not only are firms in this sector engaged in global labour markets for professional staff, but Singapore itself represents a case of explicit state-led promotion of cosmopolitanism as condition, attitude and practice. Nevertheless, interviews with financial sector professionals reveal that, while the concept of cosmopolitanism is indeed invoked in their workplaces, the realities of recruitment practice and workplace relations leave a very narrow range of personal characteristics that are deemed acceptable.
