This article examines the role of innovations and exports in the evolution of industry life cycle in the Finnish electrical industry during 1960 to 2005. Patents reflect a country's technological innovation capability, and exports in turn indicate the competitiveness of an industry. The quantitative empirical data covering 46 years was collected from the official statistics. The findings indicate that four stages in the industry life cycle emerged. High correlations were found between patent applications, gross value of production, exports, and number of white-collar personnel. Amount of exports is positively correlated with gross value of production and value added. The amount of imports is also positively correlated with innovations.
