Riparian areas of the western United States are important breeding and migration habitats for migrant landbirds. To develop reliable methods for surveying and monitoring riparian avifaunas, we evaluated the relative efficiency and comparability of fixed-width line transects, spot mapping, and fixed-radius point counts. Intensive, single-visit spot mapping yielded greater species richness and higher total relative abundances than line transects for all riparian habitats combined, but these differences largely disappeared when comparisons were made within habitat types (meadow, willow, and aspen).
