Researchers are increasingly being encouragednto report the methods and findings of their research in antransparent and consistent way, to enable readersnto assess the quality and reliability of the research.nTo guide researchers, recommendations on how to reportndifferent types of study have been agreed and published. Thennumber of recommendations is growing and although thenterminology is not yet standard (recommendations have anvariety of descriptive names, including ‘statements’, ‘guidelines’nand ‘checklists’) they inevitably come with a memorablenacronym! They usually embody a consensus of the views of angroup of researchers, with evidence from research, on the keynquality aspects of well-conducted studies, and are designed tonassist researchers to report the data that readers require fornunderstanding and judging published research. Journalneditors are increasingly adopting specific recommendationsnand are encouraging researchers to take note of them whennsubmitting research papers to the journals.nThe websites of the major recommendations are worthnchecking on a regular basis because the recommendationsnevolve and change to reflect changes in research practice,nquality measures and research reporting.nIf you would like to alert readers to useful webnpages or suggest topics for this column, please send details to:
