It is forty years since Anselm Strauss and his colleaguesnpublished this seminal paper. In the present day it cannbe read at two levels. First, for proponents of reform, itnprovides a benchmark for measuring progress. Second,nfor students and researchers, it is an enduring contributionnto organisation studies. The discussion that followsnis in three parts. We open with Strauss’s depiction ofnclinical work organisation and examine its benchmarkingnpotential. We then canvas the paper’s contributionnto organisation studies. We conclude by examiningnthe paper’s implications for current efforts on reform.
