Odin Anderson’s lucid account of the social andnorganizational aspects of medical care, published 40nyears ago, remains well worth reading. In three parts, thenarticle opens with a schematic history of the developmentnof health care in Western Europe and NorthnAmerica. It then offers a brief and helpful descriptiventypology of different arrangements for the funding andndelivery of health care. The essay closes with thumbnailndescriptions of the health care arrangements of threencountries: the USA, Sweden and Great Britain.nPresented as a guide to understanding rather thannprogrammatic contrasts or momentary policy advice,nAnderson’s essay is a helpful guide today to comparativenanalysis in the world of medical care.
