THE NET GENERATION: INVESTIGATING STUDENTS' SELF- REPORTED COMPUTER LITERACY

Groficiency with technology is a form of literacy. Being able to use a computer to compose a brief document, "surfing" the Internet to locate information, or completing school assignments that may include communicating with other students, calculating numeric data, and creating charts or graphs are common technology-related activities for most college students. Although these and other technology-related activities are now part of many students' lives, little is known about the extent to which they engage in computer literacy practices for academic pursuits. The current study examines students' self-efficacy beliefs and experiences regarding their level of computer knowledge and skills. The study participants included 156 business students self-enrolled in a 200-level microcomputer applications course. Responses were solicited from students using a 5-page survey for a period spanning three years beginning fall 2008 through fall 2011. The results of this study contribute to the scholarship on computer literacy and enable us to offer a nuanced interpretation of differences derived from students' self-efficacy beliefs.
