MESH NETWORKS: A LOOK AT THE LEGAL FUTURE

There currently are, of course, problems that may prevent widespread adoption of wireless networks. Community networks may depend on the number of "Geek Activists" in the area, implementing a wireless mesh requires a degree of technological competency, and community networks require several of these people in order to be effective. The implementation of municipal networks is subject to lobbying and other political pressures. Other factors may affect the ability of wireless mesh networks to compete with other forms of networking, including long-term contracts on behalf of current ISPs (lock in), transparency, or the ability of customers to realize dissatisfactory practices, and population density (enough willing participants within the LOS constraints).rnEven with some implementation problems, WiFi mesh networking stands poised to change current industry practices. Lessig's writings explore the ability of the code or architecture of a technology to determine the law's ability to regulate. Others discuss that in relation to technology, society can't help but to react, rather than act. As technology advances, legislators and other regulators can only hope to catch up. For example, the law is just now beginning to address some of the issues of one kind of P2P technology—Grokster—as others—such as BitTorrent—materialize. Wireless mesh networking is no different.
