Numerous internal and external trends are impacting public transport. Find out the new shape and geography of the railway supply industry. Despite the trend for globalisation, the public transport manufacturing industry remains fragmented. The market for rail systems is served byjust a handful of big players with multi-billion euro turnovers, followed by a multitude of second-tier companies. Most of these big players are increasingly active on all accessible markets and the logical consolidation has so far failed to occur. The market is characterised by low volumes, high customisation, high Research and Development needs and long cycles. So it should come as no surprise that profitability in this sector is generally low.
