On 7 July 2005,52 innocent people were killed as a result of four suicide bombers detonating backpacks containing homemade high explosives. The evidence for the inquests into their deaths was heard by Lady Justice Hallett in her capacity of Assistant Deputy Coroner between October 2010 and March 2011. Over 300 witnesses gave oral evidence with more than 200 statements read out. Transport for London alone disclosed over 1000 documents. Lady Hallett sat without a jury and gave verdicts of unlawful killing in respect of each of the deceased, with the medical cause of deaths recorded as "injuries caused by an explosion". She ruled that on the balance of probabilities none of the 52 who died could have been saved even if help from the emergency services had arrived earlier.
