Directive 2003/59, on the training of professional drivers, which provides for the initial qualification and periodic training of professional drivers, came into force in our sector a little over one and a half years ago (September 2008).rnAt the time, the Directive raised some concerns in our sector because of the choice between options A and B (see footnote 3), the large amount of preparation required (and the cost of the investments needed to meet these requirements), the likelihood of it adding to recruitment problems (since a licence alone is no longer enough to get a job) and drivers' reactions to compulsory periodic training, which could be seen as a 'requirement to go back to school' despite their often having worked professionally and responsibly for many years.
