摘要

In recent years in the United States, a perfect storm of circumstances has led to an unprecedented national effort to link transportation, urban development and environmental protection. Unpredictable gas prices, increasingly congested highways, the Gulf Oil spill and a growing public awareness of the link between transportation and greenhouse gas emissions are among the factors that have created an unparalleled demand for clean, walkable communities with easy access to reliable public transit. Even in America's small towns and rural communities, people want transportation choices, and their Mayors are responding. This demand is only expected to increase in the coming years, as demographic trends show a growing number of older households and households without children - two groups that are more likely to want to live in places where they can get around on foot and by transit.
