Rail and road are the lifeblood of any mobile society. To prevent Vienna's marginalisation in the new Europe, the city's rail and road infrastructure needs to be extended in a targeted way. "By 2035 Vienna will have two million inhabitants. Not only will dwellings and jobs be needed - transport projects will also have to keep pace with this growth. In this respect we are cultivating high quality standards and leading-edge technologies," said Vienna's transport councillor and engineer, Rudi Schicker. Optimal transport routes ensure a bigger sales market and greater competitiveness. Atthe same time Vienna's infrastructure projects are an important economic driver. They are safeguarding an annual 2,900 or so jobs in road-building and a further 5,000 jobs or thereabouts a year in metro construction.
