摘要

The demand for public transport has increased consistently in many countries over the last five years. Ridership rose by about 11% in Spain, the UK and the USA between 2004 and 2008. London and Brussels recorded particularly high ridership increases - about 20% - during the same period. In France outside Paris, the number of passenger journeys grew by about 12% between 2006 and 2008 alone1.rnThe issue of capacity increase has made its way to the top of the strategic agendas of public transport operators and authorities. The increase in fuel prices played an important role. The deterioration of traffic conditions in cities, with increasing congestion and parking difficulties, as well as unpredictable travel times, are other factors. This shift to public transport also reflects a growing consciousness of the environmental footprint of mobility.
