Cities and urbanized areas in general, where there is a high density of people, buildings and traffic, are receiving more and more attention as a large part of the world's population lives in them. The urban population is expected to grow significantly in the next decades, passing from presently 3.3 billion to 6.4 billion people in 2050. Of the European population, 75% live in cities and urbanized areas. Cities are economic drivers. Their success has, however, generated some major and crucial societal problems related to the phenomena of road congestion, emissions of environmental pollutants, and global warming. Up to 80% of C0_2 emissions come from urbanized areas and 70% of these emissions are generated by housing and transport.
