In Gauteng Province, South Africa, public transport is currently serviced by a multiplicity of uncoordinated operators. There are three municipally subsidised bus operators and 34 provincially subsidised bus operators. Further, a BRT has just been established in Johannesburg and the first phase has just been operationalised. There is a heavy rait service that is managed and operated by a subsidiary of national government and an intercity rail service, the Gautrain that is to be operational by 2011. With a population of 11.3 million, of which 98% is urbanized and over 70% rely on public transport, (which equates to 7.9 million people), accessibility, affordability and integrated systems become a very real issue. Even though transport takes place at the local level, commuter movement patterns do not follow local authority boundaries.
