The time-honoured tradition of hailing a black taxicab is an emblematic part of London life and a recognised feature of the city landscape for residents and visitors alike. However, there is much more to the London licensed taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) industry than this traditional image might suggest. At the Conference held by UlTP's MENA division in London last year, a range of speakers painted a picture of a dynamic and evolving sector and many interesting issues emerged from their presentations. Anne Coveney from Transport for London presented the results of research into the use of taxis and private hire vehicles in central and greater London. Some 34% of London residents have used a taxi at least once and the figure is very similar for private hire vehicles (36%). However, taxis are much more common in central London, with PHVs more widely used in outer London. Equally, taxi users are statistically more likely to be young, white and full-time workers, whilst it is more frequent for people from ethnic minority backgrounds and disabled people to use a PHV. Meanwhile, non-resident users are more likely to choose a taxi over a PHV.
