PTI: On the occasion of this 1st MENA Congress, UITP made the so-called "Dubai Declaration", thus encouraging the development of public transport in the region and highlighting the need for strategic, tactical and operational integration as well as the use of ICT. It stresses the importance of political support. What's your vision of the development of the mobility sector in the future? M.A.M.: There are great development opportunities for public transport in the MENA region. I think that, especially now, there is a rising awareness at governmental level of the fact that cars are killing cities and that there is a need for concrete actions. My vision is that public transport will be developing. The initiative for public transport is a top-down process and there is a strong political will. Even if some developments were maybe not successful and systems will have to adapt, this actually turns out to be positive, as they offer an opportunity to learn from others.
