摘要

Our time machine has already introduced us very briefly to horse traction and the first electric trams and their extraordinary development up until the 1940s. However, after the Second World War, a curious four-wheel vehicle became an ever stronger presence in our environment - the focus of all our attention as well as that of the authorities: the automobile! Comfortable and offering a greater autonomy in time/space, its success is dazzling. Public transport, and surface urban rail networks in particular, were the hardest hit by this rival. Rail networks closed down, and in some cases were replaced by buses.
