The topic of climate change has become increasingly critical to Australians in recent years. On a per capita basis, Australia is one of the biggest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters in the world. In the State of Victoria, transport is the second largest producer of GHG (17%) after stationary energy production, with private cars contributing to the majority of these transport emissions (58% in 2008). Boosting public transport usage is therefore vitally important in reducing GHG emissions in Melbourne; however, significant barriers stand in the way of a large scale mode shift.
