In connection with the entry into force of the new Directive on ambient air quality (2008/50/EC), the European Commission has asked 23 Member States to provide data on measures for ensuring the compliance with air quality standards on particulate matter (PM10 particles). Member States have until 30 September 2008 to convey these data to the Commission. The new Directive on air quality, which came into effect on 11 June 2008, consolidates and replaces earlier legislation such as the 'Particulate Matter Directive' 1999/30/EC. It contains additional thresholds for PM10 ultra-fine particulate matter, which should gradually be complied with by 2020. The Directive also sets target values for ozone.
