Guayaquil is Ecuador's most populated city, with 2.5 million inhabitants. It covers a total area of 32,440 hectares, although only 18,000 hectares are inhabited. Guayaquil has achieved international recognition in the public transport sector with its new Metrovfa system, an innovative management, regulation and operation control concept operated by the city council. Its self-sustainability and contribution to social development and environmental protection were recognised this year when it won the Sustainable Transport Award in Washington (USA).
