The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO), Houston, Texas USA opened Houston's new Main Street light rail transit (LRT) line on 1 January, 2004. This 7.5 mile, USD 324 million LRT line traverses the heart of the nation's fourth largest city, integrating the major employment and entertainment centres located along Houston's premiere corridor, Main Street. The Greater Houston Metropoli-tan Area covers 8,778 square miles with a population of approximately four million. METRO'S service area covers 1,285 square miles, with system-wide bus and rail boardings at 91.9 million in the year ending 20 September 2004, LRT boardings are more than 33,000 per day and special event days have as many as 40,000 boardings. The line carries more passengers per mile than any other new LRT line in the US. The opening of the Main Street LRT is the culmination of planning efforts that predate the formation of METRO more than 25 years ago. A consistent goal over the years has been to develop a rail line that served Down- town (Central Business District) and Reliant Park, (a major sports and entertainment complex) and used Main Street as an alignment. After many failed efforts to build light rail in Houston, primarily because of lack of a consensus among local voters and elected officials, the Main Street line was built following an extensive public involvement programme and organised assistance from corridor stakeholders.
