The TransMilenio system came into operation in January 2001 with an initial fleet of 113 trunk buses that was expanded gradually as new infrastructures came on line. By the time the first phase was completed, the system consisted of 470 articulated buses that travelled via three trunk routes, covering a distance of 42 kilometres equipped with 57 standard stations and four terminal stations. The system currently handles an average weekday demand of 750,000 passengers. On 20 November 2003, the second phase of the system consisting of three further trunk routes came on line.
