With a book of this scope, size and complexity, it is worthwhile oudining a brief plan for reviewing it. So I propose to consider first, its novelty; second, its overall argument; and third, its relative strengths and weaknesses. There is inevitable overlap between the three areas, but I hope to give prospective readers a clear accounting of each.
