This up-to-date career exploration guide looks at the wide and ever-expanding variety of careers available to information professionals today. The authors see the information field as 'the rising profession of our time' and believe that 'information' is evolving into a recognized professional discipline on the level of business, public policy, public health, and social work (p.ix). The book examines eight broad career areas in information: archives and information preservation, records management, library and information services, human-computer interaction, social computing, information systems management, information policy, and information analysis and retrieval. Each chapter includes an introduction, a visual career map, skills and abilities needed, key terms to know, options within the career area, an occupational outlook, salary information, first-person perspectives from three people working in the field, sample job descriptions, resources for further information/exploration, education and training needed, and references.
