摘要

In Youth, heroism and war propaganda D.A.B Ronald charts the emergence of the young hero in British naval news-reporting, propaganda, literature and poetry from the aftermath of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion to the war against Napoleonic France. According to Ronald, it was in the latter period that the figure of the young naval hero received a symbolic power it never had before, becoming the embodiment of Britain's new patriotism. Ronald's study covers a broader scope than one initially expects from the title, reaching into the history of war propaganda and the making of war heroes, of naval biography, the political conflicts within the Navy, and the history of youth and masculinity in eighteenth-century Britain. Ronald aims to further Timothy Jenks' 2006 study Naval engagements (Oxford, 2006), which explored naval images during the wars against Revolutionary France in the context of the new patriotism. Jenks, however, did not acknowledge the central position that naval youth was given in the Navy's public image, and neither did those historians who mapped naval youths' functions and status, starting with Geoffrey Penn's, Snotty: the story of the midshipman (London, 1957) and Michael Lewis' Social history of the navy, 1793-1815 (London, 1960), to more recent works, such as Samantha Cavell's Midshipmen and quarterdeck boys in the British Navy, 1771-1831 (Woodbridge, 2012) and this author's work The real Jim Hawkins: ships' boys in the Georgian Navy (Barnsley, 2010). Cultural historians generally neglected the presence of youth in maritime literature prior to Marryat's Midshipman easy in the 1830s, with the exception of Charles Robinson's The British Tar in fact and fiction (London, 1909), while political historians substantially ignored it.
