摘要

Post Captains were the fulcrum of the sailing navy. Both the Admiralty and the Navy Board strove to position ships, stores and men in the right place at the right time, but it was down the captain to turn this amalgam into an effective fighting force. For some, this responsibility steered individuals towards disapprobation or ignominy. It should not surprise us that much has been written about sea officers, especially admirals, and their service as post captains has generally been seen as a stepping stone to greatness, or in a few notable cases failure. What has not been studied in any systematic way is the plethora of duties and responsibilities placed on these individuals, and this is something that McLeod sets out to rectify in her study of the naval commanders that served during the Seven Years' War.
