摘要

This article contributes to the discussion of the nature of just war, by appealing to some overlooked perspectives in sub-Saharan ethics. By drawing on the moral thought of one of the most prominent African philosophers of the present century, Kwasi Wiredu, the article aims to demonstrate the way in which consensus helps to account for what makes going to war just. I argue that the understanding of consensus as agreement to, rather than unanimity, reasonably determines the morality of a political community's recourse to war. Although such a consensus-based approach to jus ad bellum is under-appreciated in Western just war theory, my proposal here is that this approach merits serious consideration.
