John Mearsheimer's book, Why Leaders Lie, initiates a provocative conversation on the calculations behind lying by political leaders for political/strategic advantage. As he states in the introduction, this is not a complete research project, but a first attempt at constructing an analytical framework. It suffers from the shortcomings that every first effort at a taxonomy does, with debatable distinctions between categories, but it is nevertheless an interesting start.
