For those seeking to learn about the ethics of war, finding the right book is important. This is especially true for undergraduate students who are encountering the principles, concepts and issues of the ethics of war for the first time. Because these students typically only have a semester to study a given topic, selecting a text is an important decision for instructors. Stephen Coleman and Helen Frowe, the writers of Military Ethics: An Introduction with Case Studies and The Ethics of War and Peace: An Introduction, respectively, have both developed texts that would be superb for undergraduate students taking a course focused on the ethics of war. In what follows I will discuss the characteristics of these texts that make them well suited for these types of courses; however, my review will also be useful for anyone looking for books that effectively introduce the reader to the important ideas of the ethics of war.
