摘要

The study of evil and the different forms in which it manifests itself has long been the interest of a significant number of scholars, mainly philosophers and theologians. Yet, following the liberation of places like Auschwitz, where evil was perpetrated in its most efficient and brutal way, the number of scholars interested in this subject has grown significantly. Scholars' commitment has focused on making sense of what had been humanity's most shocking discovery of the century. The objective of the research that has taken place since the end of the 1940s has focused on understanding and explaining evil in the hope that such a new body of knowledge would help prevent evil from happening. It was somehow disheartening to accept the fact that evil can be banal, and that zealous bureaucrats can easily become perpetrators of the worst evil deeds. What is far from banal is the research necessary to the understanding of how normal individuals become perpetrators.
